PSG's Ezequiel Lavezzi talks about his depression and tremors

The former PSG striker, Ezequiel Lavezzi, 41, spoke on Monday in an interview on Amazon Prime Italia about the tremors that worry him, revealing that he suffers from depression and is undergoing medication after two hospitalisations in 2024, and mentions the support he received on social media after his appearance in the Argentine media outlet El Canceller.

Viral image and massive support

The striking image of Lavezzi, shared for a week on social media after his appearance in the Argentine media outlet El Canceller, has sparked a wave of massive support in recent days. Numerous messages of encouragement have poured in, showing the public's affection for the former player.

This renewed attention led the footballer to speak out, still on Amazon Prime Italia, where he was interviewed by former Italian striker Luca Toni. The programme, titled “Fenomeni”, allowed Lavezzi to calmly explain his condition.

Health journey and role of the family

“I suffered from depression, I was hospitalized, I take medication and I am undergoing treatment,” said Ezequiel Lavezzi during the exchange with Luca Toni. He added: “When I stopped playing, a void appeared and there was nothing to fill it.” He notes that he is recovering little by little.

In 2023, Lavezzi was hospitalized after an abdominal and clavicle injury in Uruguay, then in early 2024 he was admitted to a mental‑health facility in Buenos Aires. These two hospitalisations have fueled questions about his health.

The birth of his second son, Vittorio, in 2024, changed his life. “The birth of my son gave me the strength to keep going,” he affirmed, emphasizing that the little one brings joy and vitality.

The former Argentine international, with 51 caps and 9 goals, recalls his bond with Diego Maradona, whom he describes as an exceptional man, and his special friendship with Lionel Messi, who has supported him throughout this period. He also mentions the support of Sergio Agüero and Paolo Cannavaro.

Retired since 2019, Lavezzi ended his career at Chinese club Hebei China Fortune. His trajectory, marked by 51 caps and 9 goals for Argentina, remains etched in the memories of PSG supporters and football fans worldwide.

His confession highlights how athletes go through the “little death” of depression and lack of motivation, reminding of the importance of psychological support in professional sport.
