Real Madrid's centre‑back hunt stalls as Schlotterbeck ruled out
Two months of recovery will keep Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck unavailable for Real Madrid’s immediate centre‑back plans, as the Spanish giants have ruled him out despite earlier interest. The decision comes as Jose Mourinho seeks a new defender before the transfer window closes.
Club sources, reported by The Athletic, have confirmed that Schlotterbeck is no longer a realistic option for Real Madrid. Internally, the defender had been admired for a considerable period before the latest assessment.
He had emerged as one of the preferred candidates to bolster a defence that struggled with inconsistency and injuries throughout the previous season. Real Madrid’s back line required reinforcement after a campaign disrupted by multiple absences.
Schlotterbeck suffered an ankle injury during the FIFA World Cup, an injury expected to sideline him for around two months. The setback means he will miss the remainder of the tournament and could be unavailable for the opening weeks of the new La Liga campaign.
Earlier reports indicated Real Madrid continued to monitor the player despite his injury concerns. However, Mario Cortegana has now revealed that Schlotterbeck is out of the Real Madrid running.
Fitness concerns have played a major role in the decision, given Madrid’s desire to recruit players capable of making an immediate impact. Mourinho has demanded a new centre‑back to add depth after a season heavily disrupted by injuries.
With Schlotterbeck no longer among the leading candidates, attention has shifted towards other names under consideration. One player increasingly linked with the Santiago Bernabeu is Tomas Araujo, although no movement on that front has been reported.
