Real needs a clear plan: Rodrygo back, Endrick sees little game time

Under José Mourinho, Real Madrid has stabilised, but after two defeats in the first seven games the team is six points behind FC Barcelona and is looking for fresh impetus – especially from the almost recovered Rodrygo and the barely used Endrick. This comes from Denis Doyle/Getty Images.

Real Madrid needs fresh impetus to close the gap to Barcelona. In the match against Atlético Madrid, coach José Mourinho introduced Yan Diomande early in the second half for Vinicius Jr., a potential catalyst for more attacking power. The coach hopes that Diomande can revive the offense, while Vinicius Jr. is expected to return to the game.

Rodrygo's Return as a Possible Boost

The 25‑year‑old Brazilian Rodrygo is in the final stages of his rehabilitation after a cruciate ligament tear in March. His recovery suggests an imminent comeback, which the team urgently needs. In the summer of 2025 he was the focus of Bayern Munich and Liverpool, but remained at Real.

With his contract running until 2028, a possible departure becomes more pressing. According to Fabrizio Romano, an early move in the winter is ruled out; Real told the agents not to accept any offers and that Rodrygo should focus on full recovery for the second half of the season. Real emphasizes that recovery is the priority.

Endrick's Playing Time Problem

The 20‑year‑old striker Endrick, who delivered good performances for Olympique Lyon in the previous half‑season, receives little playing time under Mourinho. This season he has so far only been on the pitch for four minutes, because Carlos Espi is fully fit. Carlos Espi, who has been starting regularly since the beginning of the season, occupies the front line.

If Endrick continues to play very little over the next two months, another loan move before the winter transfer window could be considered. A loan would give him regular appearances.

The contrasting perspectives – Rodrygo's upcoming return versus Endrick's lack of playing time – highlight that Real needs a clear plan to close the gap to Barcelona. A clear plan is required to get the team moving again. Only a clear plan can save the season.
