Richarlison's failed loan move leaves Vasco hopes hanging
Tottenham striker Richarlison spoke on Friday about a collapsed transfer to Vasco, saying he was on the brink of signing for the Rio de Janeiro side. He confirmed that playing at the Cruz‑Maltino stadium was his top priority, even as other clubs showed interest.
Cruz‑Maltino as priority
In a video posted to his social channels, Richarlison thanked the Vasco supporters for their outpouring of messages and reiterated that the club had been his clear first choice. He said the Cruz‑Maltino stadium represented a lifelong ambition.
He revealed that he had spoken directly with Vasco president Pedrinho and head coach Felipe, telling them his desire to wear the club’s shirt. “We were very close to me signing with Vasco, my heart team, the team of my whole family,” he said.
Tottenham's loan limit blocks move
Richarlison added that the deal fell apart because Tottenham imposed a strict loan limit that the Brazilian side could not meet. The English club’s conditions, he explained, prevented the move from being finalised.
He praised the flood of fan messages, noting they even asked which hour and on which day he would arrive at the airport for a welcome celebration. Though the party never materialised, he expressed gratitude for the affection shown.
Despite the setback, Richarlison affirmed his intention to fulfil the dream of playing for Vasco one day. “Um dia eu vou realizar esse sonho, que é meu, que é do meu avô, que é da minha família,” he promised, adding that he will soon visit São Januário and the Barreira training ground.
He concluded that the opportunity may come again, urging the club and its supporters to keep believing. The striker left the door open for a future signing that would unite his family’s legacy with the club’s history.
