Ronaldo accuses Jesus of broken promises, Portugal in crisis

Cristiano Ronaldo (41) explained via an extensive Instagram statement why he left Portugal's training camp, after national team coach Jorge Jesus, according to him, did not keep his word and promised him a half‑hour of playing time shortly before the match against Norway, but did not let it happen.

Broken promises and departure

Ronaldo wrote: “I didn’t feel like dealing with any more broken promises”. He apologized to the supporters and his teammates for leaving the camp without thanking them. “I’m not just a player, I’m the captain and that makes my behaviour worse,” said the 41‑year‑old star player. His decision came after he, following the World Cup, had indicated he wanted to quit as an international, but the federation chairman had asked him to reconsider his decision.

Meeting, expectations and press conference

In a conversation prior to the Nations‑League‑window, Ronaldo claimed he would not play against Norway and Denmark. On the day of the match against Norway, however, Jesus told him he would play 30 minutes. Ronaldo warmed up from the second half, watched the minutes tick by and was not brought on – “The manager broke his word to me”.

Two days later an intense and direct conversation took place in which it was agreed that Jesus would confirm at the press conference that Ronaldo had never asked for playing time. The press conference, however, unfolded differently; Ronaldo heard remarks and attacks that he found unjust and a attitude of “I want it, I can do it, I’m the boss”. He concluded that this was the second time the coach had broken his word and left the camp.

Future and reaction of the federation

Despite the departure, Ronaldo does not rule out a return. “If I am physically fit, play for my club and hopefully score goals, I will, after I have served the imposed suspension, be available as I have always been.” He emphasized that he is telling his full truth.

Jorge Jesus denied after the 2‑1 victory over Norway that there had been an agreement with Ronaldo, but left the door open for a possible return of the 41‑year‑old top scorer. His statement contrasts with Ronaldo’s claim that there was a clear agreement on playing minutes.
