Ronaldo and Jesus seek reconciliation after bench in Nations League duel

In Malmö, Cristiano Ronaldo (41) and national team coach Jorge Jesus spoke at length on Tuesday to ease the tension after the Nations League duel with Norway, in which the superstar sat on the bench for the entire match. The conversation, reported by Record and A Bola, was said to have taken place in a positive atmosphere.

Promised minutes, but no playing time

Jesus had previously told Ronaldo that he could count on playing time as a substitute against Norway. However, during the match he decided that the Al‑Nassr striker was not needed, leaving the 41‑year‑old on the bench.

The decision irritated Ronaldo, who did not say a word to the disappointed fans after the match. Earlier it had been reported that a conversation with federation press officer Pedro Proença would take place on Wednesday, but it is unclear whether this will still happen. The lack of a thank‑you was seen by the press as a sign of frustration.

In the opening of the Nations League campaign against Wales, Ronaldo started in the lineup, but was substituted midway through the second half. This change confirmed the fluctuating role of the superstar within the team.

During the World Cup he found himself in a crucial situation only once, namely in the round of 16 against Croatia. There he was also not used, which further fueled his dissatisfaction.

After the tournament national team coach Roberto Martínez left, who had always defended the five‑time Ballon d'Or winner vigorously. Ronaldo continues to aim for the 1,000‑goal milestone for Portugal.
