Ronaldo breaks silence, blames dishonesty after quitting Portugal team

On a rainy afternoon in Lisbon, Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of the Portugal national team, published an extensive statement to clarify the reasons for his abrupt departure from the national camp after the second Nations League match. The former player claimed that, after 48 hours from the match in Norway, a conversation with manager Jorge Jesus and sporting director Simão Coutinho revealed a lack of honesty that forced him to leave.

The falling out with the manager

Ronaldo explained that, after being a substitute in the match against Norway, the coach offered him to play only the first game and stay in Portugal, excluding him from the trip to Denmark. The forward rejected the offer, considering it incompatible with his role as captain. Later, the manager asked him to play 30 minutes in the second match, which Ronaldo accepted even though it was not part of his physical recovery plan.

The captain described the subsequent meeting, in which he, Jorge Jesus and Simão Coutinho reviewed the agreements. According to Ronaldo, the coach agreed to repeat in the press conference the version he had expressed privately, with the aim of “telling the truth”.

Public statements and apologies

In the statement, Ronaldo quoted the manager saying: “I want Cristiano in the National Team…”. He also included notes highlighting the player’s influence for 24 consecutive years and his more than 230 appearances with the national shirt. The forward admitted that he did not greet the fans at the end of the match and apologized to the Portuguese people, to the supporters and to his teammates for the breach of trust.

Ronaldo emphasized that, if the Federation did not want him, it was enough to tell him clearly. He asserted that his decision to leave the camp was a response to the manager’s “second breach of word”, and reiterated his respect for truth and transparency in the relationship between them.
