Salah gets German coach Reis at top club Trabzonspor

Thomas Reis takes over the coaching job at Turkish top club Trabzonspor, bringing the German coach to the Egyptian striker star Mohamed Salah, who recently moved from Liverpool to Turkey. The move marks the return of a German manager to one of the biggest names in international football. The 52‑year‑old Reis signed a two‑year contract.

Reis succeeds Fatih Tekke, who had resigned after a failed Europa League qualification. The 52‑year‑old manager was most recently under contract with the Bulgarian club Ludogorets Razgrad. His two‑year contract with Trabzonspor was officially confirmed by the club.

Reis' Turkish experience and previous successes

In 2024, Reis took over Samsunspor and spectacularly guided the team to third place and into the Europa League. In February of the same year he left the club after the team had slipped into mid‑table. Previously, he managed Schalke 04 from 2022 to 2023, but was unable to prevent the relegation of the Kings Blues.

The star Mohamed Salah, who spent many years at Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp as a striker star, also signed a two‑year contract with the club. The Egyptian star moved in the summer to the Black Sea coast and is therefore the central figure of Trabzonspor.

Trabzonspor in league and European competition

The club currently sits in ninth place in the Turkish Süper Lig, six points behind the top of the table. In the Conference League, Trabzonspor will face, among others, Bundesliga side SC Freiburg in the group stage. The team hopes to turn the season around with Salah and the new coach.

Reis emphasized: “Working with a player of his caliber is probably one of the finest things that can happen to a manager.” He also reminded that “to win games, we need not only Salah but the entire team.”

The juxtaposition of an experienced German manager with an international star highlights that Trabzonspor relies on both tactical leadership and individual quality – but the success will ultimately depend on the performance of all eleven players.
