Scaloni's tears expose uncertain future after World Cup loss

Argentina’s defeat in the World Cup final on Sunday has left manager Lionel Scaloni in tears and facing an uncertain future, with his contract due to expire in December after he failed to become the second coach to retain the trophy following the 2022 Qatar triumph.

Scaloni, who steered Argentina to back‑to‑back World Cup finals, addressed the post‑match press conference under the watch of Getty Images. The Argentine side had reached the pinnacle of the tournament for the second consecutive time.

European champions Spain proved decisive, with Ferran Torres' extra‑time strike securing victory for Luis de la Fuente's side. The win added a European crown to Spain's trophy cabinet.

At 48, Scaloni was on the verge of becoming only the second manager ever to retain the World Cup after guiding Argentina to the 2022 triumph in Qatar. That achievement would have placed him alongside the sole predecessor who repeated the feat.

Scaloni's contract is set to run out in December, a deadline he highlighted while speaking through tears. He said he would discuss his future with the Argentine president and needed time to consider his options.

"I will talk to the president," Scaloni said. "I have an idea of what I would like to do and will see out my contract, though I am unsure if something as big can be done." He added that resetting his mind and rebuilding a group like this would be very difficult.

He eventually stood, apologised and said, "It's really painful, I am very sorry." Scaloni emphasized the dream nature of his role and the collective effort of staff and players.
