Slavia Prague-Lens: the shock of a revival after three years
Three years after its last participation, Racing Club de Lens (RCL) returns to the Champions League. For its entry, the Lens players travel to Prague, in the Czech Republic, on Sparta's pitch, this Thursday at 9 p.m., after a 2026 season crowned by the French Cup and the Champions Trophy.
Mixed start in Ligue 1
In Ligue 1, RCL opened the campaign with a dazzling 5‑2 victory over Auxerre, before suffering two defeats, 1‑2 to Strasbourg then 0‑1 to Lorient. These results have sowed doubt among the Lens players about their ability to set the pace in Europe.
Sparta, champion in form
For its part, Sparta Prague dominates the national league, posting five wins and two draws in seven matches. As defending champions, the Czech club aims to extend its unbeaten run against an opponent that has never passed the group stage since the 2007‑2008 season.
The previous three RCL appearances in the Champions League ended with eliminations at the group stage. This time, the goal is to break the curse and aim for the first success in more than a decade.
Former Slavia international Pavel Smicer said: “Lens, it’s my family.” His comment highlights the emotional bond between the player and the club, boosting the Lens players' motivation before the trip.
An ideal start in Prague would give RCL the best chances of getting out of the league phase, an essential prerequisite after an uncertain league start. The match, broadcast on French channels, will be closely followed by supporters.
Thus, the contrast between Sparta’s upward form and the doubts hovering over RCL reveals the crucial stakes of this first clash: turning domestic momentum into continental success.
