Transfers WOMEN

Sunderland's two‑year gamble on Elise Hughes underlines rising ambition

🇬🇧

Sunderland have secured former Crystal Palace forward Elise Hughes on a two‑year contract, announced on the club’s website on Tuesday evening. The 25‑year‑old striker will join Sunderland after her contract with Crystal Palace expired, marking her first move since leaving the Eagles.

Hughes spent four seasons at Crystal Palace, having arrived from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2022. During her tenure she established herself as a regular scorer in the English women’s leagues.

She helped The Eagles secure promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League on two occasions. Those promotions marked key milestones in Crystal Palace’s recent rise.

In the 2023/2024 championship‑winning campaign she netted 16 league goals. Overall she recorded 34 goals in 89 appearances for Crystal Palace.

“It feels amazing to be here. This is a huge moment for me, and I’m excited to get started,” Hughes said. She added that Sunderland’s ambition and proud history motivate her to contribute goals and assists.

The signing makes Hughes Sunderland’s first acquisition of the summer transfer window. The club, known as the Lady Black Cats, highlighted the move as part of their ongoing development plan.

Her arrival underscores Sunderland’s intent to strengthen the squad ahead of the upcoming season. The deal reflects the growing activity in the women’s transfer market as clubs invest in proven talent.
