Thomas Partey swaps Europe for a one‑season Saudi Pro League stint

Al-Shabab of Arábia Saudita announced on Friday the signing of 33‑year‑old midfielder Thomas Partey on a free transfer after his contract with Villarreal of Espanha expired, with the deal running for one season in the Saudi Pro League, a move that adds another Europa star to the Gulf.

Free transfer and season details

The Saudi Pro League side secured Partey on a cost‑free basis after his contract with Villarreal ended. The agreement is set for a single season, after which the player will become a free agent again.

During the 2025/26 campaign, Partey featured in 32 matches for Villarreal, often referred to by its nickname Submarino Amarelo. At the close of La Liga, the defensive midfielder could not reach a renewal deal with the Spanish club and began exploring other options.

Partey first rose to prominence with Atlético Madrid, where he collected a Europa League trophy and a European Super Cup. He later moved to Arsenal, spending five seasons in London before joining Villarreal.

His transfer adds to a growing list of European players opting for the Saudi Pro League, highlighting the league’s increasing financial pull. The move underscores the appeal of a one‑season contract for a veteran seeking a new challenge, and the signing of Partey} illustrates the shift.
