Thomas Reis assumes Salah coaching at Trabzonspor – course for stars
In the maritime environment of the Black Sea, Trabzonspor announced on Thursday the signing of the 52‑year‑old German coach Thomas Reis as the new coach of Egyptian star Mohamed Salah. The club confirmed that Reis will be on the sidelines of the ambitious Turkish top‑flight side in the future.
Journey of the German coach
Thomas Reis, who previously coached VfL Bochum and Schalke 04, returned to Turkey surprisingly quickly. His earlier stint in Turkey included managing Samsunspor, which he took to third place in the Süper Lig in the summer of 2025 before being dismissed in February.
Before moving to Trabzonspor, Reis led the Bulgarian perennial champions Ludogorets for about two months, where he remained unbeaten in nine league matches. Despite this success, the team missed out on qualification for the Conference League; his overall record there was seven wins, three draws and one loss in eleven games.
New challenge at Trabzonspor
The contract with Trabzonspor runs for two years, with the first year valued at one million euros and the second at 1.2 million euros. Initially, a season‑end contract model was speculated, but the final duration has now been confirmed.
After a modest start, Trabzonspor sits in ninth place in the Süper Lig after five games. Reis's first match is already scheduled for the upcoming Saturday against Galatasaray, a crucial litmus‑test duel for the new project.
Mohamed Salah, who after leaving Liverpool has taken the Trabzonspor shirt, sought a stable environment following the controversial split from former coach Fatih Tekke. With Thomas Reis as coach, the stars of Trabzonspor hope to revive their season ambitions.
