Tóch Champions League: Stamford Bridge Chelsea welcomes Shakhtar
In a striking display of solidarity, Tóch Champions League sees Stamford Bridge Chelsea open its doors to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, granting the war‑displaced club a temporary home for its Champions League fixtures after the conflict between Oekraïne and Rusland made its own stadium unusable.
Shakhtar seeks temporary home
The Oekraïense club Shakhtar Donetsk is competing in this season’s Champions League and was still searching for a temporary stadium to host its matches of the billion‑dollar tournament. The search intensified as the club prepared for the League Phase of the competition.
Because the war between Oekraïne and Rusland prevents the team from playing on home soil, Shakhtar must find an alternative venue for the League Phase of the competition. De club therefore began its quest for a suitable ground early in the pre‑season.
The club began its search for a temporary home for the upcoming season, after having played its home games in Poland the previous campaign. This previous arrangement highlighted the club’s need for a reliable venue outside Ukraine.
Chelsea confirms stadium availability
Chelsea confirmed through its official channels that Stamford Bridge may be used by Shakhtar for its Champions League fixtures. The approval was posted on Chelsea’s official platforms, confirming the arrangement.
"Given the disappointing 2025/26 season and missing European football, the club is delighted to give Shakhtar the chance to play in London during their Champions League campaign," the statement read. The club highlighted its own recent domestic disappointment as motivation to assist the Ukrainian side. "We will work closely with the Shakhtar team in the coming weeks to ensure match days are safe and smooth for their team and supporters," Chelsea added.
Shakhtar reacted positively, saying: "Stamford Bridge is one of the most famous stadiums in the world of football, with an incredible history and atmosphere. We are convinced the matches in London will deliver unforgettable emotions for both Ukrainian and English fans." Shakhtar expressed confidence that the iconic venue would create memorable moments for supporters from both nations.
