Tonda Eckert receives six‑week ban and €33,000 fine for Southampton
Tonda Eckert, the 33‑year‑old German team manager of Southampton, must accept a six‑week suspended ban as well as a fine of around €33,000, after the FA convicted him in the Spygate scandal. The decision came on Wednesday, after an independent commission of the English Football League confirmed the breaches.
Sanction and Penalty
The suspended ban runs until the end of the 2027‑28 season and will only be activated if Eckert breaches the rules again within that period. In addition, he was fined about €33,000, which is roughly $37,000 in US dollars. Despite the penalty, his role at the English second‑division club remains unaffected, allowing him to continue on the Saints' sidelines.
Espionage Allegations in Detail
The FA found that Eckert committed three breaches of Rule E3.1 from December 2025 to May of that year. He arranged for a member of Southampton staff to observe Oxford United’s training in December, received CCTV footage from Ipswich Town’s training in April, and in May requested a spying report on Middlesbrough’s training to assess the use of midfielder Hayden Hackney.
Consequences for Southampton and Reactions
As a result of the spying affair, Southampton were excluded from the Championship playoffs after a semi‑final win over Middlesbrough; Middlesbrough instead reached the final and lost to Hull City. In addition, the season began with a four‑point deduction, leaving the Saints on 10 points after eight games in 13th place. Without the deduction they would be in the upper playoff zone.
Alfie House hints Southampton may escape harsh FA ruling on Eckert
Eckert initially defended himself by stating that he was unaware that spying in England violated regulations, and pointed to the widespread use of the practice in European football. He had previously worked as a youth coach at RB Leipzig. In June he issued a public apology and asked for forgiveness in a BBC interview.
Club owner Dragan Solak showed support and described Eckert as a “good man who made poor decisions”. Solak emphasized that Eckert is among the most exciting young coaches in Europe, even though he had cost the club the chance at £200 million.
Southampton loses four points – Eckert placed on probation
Southampton resume the match against Portsmouth next Sunday. The duel, scheduled for 7 a.m. ET, sees the Saints in 19th place, while Portsmouth sit in 19th place, two points behind.
