Tottenham considers 400 million investment – Slot versus Farioli

Tottenham Hotspur barely survived the previous season in the Premier League and now, after five matchdays, sits two points at the bottom of the table. At the same time the club is weighing a possible replacement for Roberto de Zerbi between Dutch Arne Slot and Italian Francesco Farioli.

The Lilywhites made a substantial investment of around €400 million in the playing squad last summer to get the momentum going again. Despite the spending, the club continues to struggle; the current crisis has increased pressure on manager Roberto De Zerbi, leading to consideration of a former Eredivisie coach as his successor. Arne Slot, former Feyenoord manager, is top of the list to replace De Zerbi. Slot was already linked to the Premier League‑club during his time at Feyenoord, but he ignored the interest at the time. In 2024 he moved to Liverpool, where he was dismissed last year after a season in which he had led the club to the Premier League title.

It believes that Slot can now be enticed, partly because his attacking style would suit the Spurs well. The analysis states that Tottenham’s squad has sufficient depth, quality, energy and speed to further develop Slot’s playing model.

Farioli in the race

Alongside Slot, Francesco Farioli is also mentioned as a possible candidate. The Italian still needs to be bought out from FC Porto; the costs amount to €15 million during transfer windows and €20 million outside those periods. Other names on the list are Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann.

Farioli has previously attracted interest from AC Milan and Chelsea. After the dismissal of Enzo Maresca he was briefly mentioned in London, but he put an end to those rumours. The Blues ultimately chose Xabi Alonso this summer.

With a total investment of around €400 million in the playing squad, paying €15 or €20 million for Farioli should not be a barrier, while Slot is out of contract.

Slot recently turned down the position of head coach of the Dutch national team, as he told the Algemeen Dagblad. He emphasized that he prefers to be on the training ground with his players daily, something that, in his view, is not possible in the same way with a national team.

General director Robert Eenhoorn confirmed in the Willem & Wessel podcast that the respect for Slot remains undiminished and that a possible return to Rotterdam is not ruled out, but is not currently under consideration.
