Tottenham's Tonali chase hits contract wall until 2028
Tottenham Hotspur have reached personal terms with Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, but a transfer fee with the Magpies remains to be negotiated as the Italian, who is under contract until 2028, eyes a move to North London this summer.
Tonali delivered a solid campaign at Newcastle, registering three goals and seven assists across 53 matches in all competitions last season. His contributions placed him among the Premier League's top central midfielders.
Known for disciplined tackling and timely challenges, Tonali often regains possession inside his own half. He also operates as a tidy passer and can function as a box‑to‑box midfielder when required.
Tonali's contract with Newcastle United runs until the summer of 2028, meaning any deal for Tottenham would likely involve a significant fee. The long‑term deal could limit Tottenham's ability to secure him cheaply later in the year.
Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham's manager, could gain depth and quality in midfield should Tonali join. The 26‑year‑old is expected to compete for a regular first‑team place and help the club chase a European spot.
Tonali featured for Italy in the FIFA World Cup 2026 European Qualifiers knockout play‑offs against Northern Ireland on 26 March 2026 at Stadio di Bergamo. The match was captured in a photograph by Marco Luzzani.
While personal terms are settled, the final agreement between the clubs remains pending, leaving Tottenham's summer plans uncertain. Securing the midfielder soon would align with the club's ambition to strengthen its squad.
