Trossard’s double lifts Belgium into World Cup knockouts

Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard scored twice as Belgium secured a 5-1 victory over New Zealand in Al Rayyan on Friday night, ensuring progression to the World Cup knockouts. The win came after a nervy opening 90 minutes in which a draw would not have been enough to guarantee Belgium’s place in the last-16. Trossard came agonisingly close to scoring in the 12th minute when his left-footed effort struck the post, with the ball rolling agonisingly along the goalline before being cleared. VAR later intervened after Trossard’s penalty claim was overturned when the ball hit a defender’s arm in a natural position. His persistence paid off in the 19th minute when he turned home from close range after a corner to give Belgium the lead. Trossard then set up a clear chance for Kevin De Bruyne in the 41st minute, extending his tournament-high tally to 13 chances created. The Arsenal forward doubled Belgium’s advantage in the 50th minute, volleying home after his initial shot was blocked. De Bruyne added a third in the 66th minute before Trossard was substituted, with the game effectively decided. Belgium will face the third-placed team from Group A, I, or J in the last-32, with potential opponents including South Korea, Senegal, or the winner of Austria versus Algeria.
