Two Roma players miss Messi's farewell as club blocks travel
Under the floodlights of River Plate's Estadio Monumental, Lionel Messi lifted his final Argentina jersey as the 39‑year‑old netted his 126th and last national goal from the spot, sealing a 3‑0 win over Benin. Yet the celebration was muted for two Argentina teammates, who were barred from travelling.
Messi's final Argentina match and missing allies
Messi's penalty gave the South Americans a comfortable victory, and the 39‑year‑old announced his retirement, confirming he will no longer wear the number ten shirt for Argentina.
Paulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina, both members of the 2022 World Cup squad, were unable to join the farewell because AS Roma decided not to permit their travel to Buenos Aires.
AS Roma released a statement saying the club recognised the importance of the event for the two players, but the decision was based on sporting and logistical reasons, including the length of the intercontinental trip and proximity to official commitments.
Gian Piero Gasperini added that the team was too close to an important league match on Sunday, and flying the players for many hours so close to the game would not have been advisable.
