Ugarte injury stalls United's midfield overhaul, reshapes transfer plan

🇬🇧

£85 million, the asking price West Ham set for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, now looms over Manchester United's summer midfield rebuild as the club grapples with the fallout from Manuel Ugarte's knee ligament injury suffered during Uruguay's 1‑0 defeat to Spain in the international friendly.

United had been prepared to entertain offers for the 25‑year‑old Ugarte, but his knee ligament injury means he is likely to remain at Old Trafford beyond the transfer deadline. The setback forces the club to reconsider its midfield funding strategy with one fewer outgoing player.

The recruitment hierarchy places Jason Wilcox as director of football, overseeing overall responsibility, while Christopher Vivell and the scouting department handle player identification. Despite the modern structure limiting any single figure, Michael Carrick’s approval remains essential, as no signing proceeds without the head coach’s backing.

Among the midfield options, United have opened enquiries about Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, a former Manchester City academy graduate who reportedly favours a Premier League move. Mateus Fernandes remains the top priority, with Tottenham Hotspur’s £85 million asking price cited as a major hurdle despite personal terms being unlikely to cause difficulty.

Other names on the scouting radar include Alex Scott, Aurelien Tchouameni, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Sander Berge, reflecting a search for a mix of control, athleticism and long‑term value. United are not targeting a single profile but aim to assemble a balanced midfield blend.

Marcus Rashford is valued at £40 million, and the club has ruled out another season‑long loan to Barcelona, leaving his future unresolved. Should Rashford depart, United could look at left‑sided options such as Crysenscio Summerville, while defensive reinforcements are not currently a priority.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is edging toward a season‑long loan to Trabzonspor with no purchase option, and fringe keepers Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek may seek regular minutes elsewhere. The fate of forward Joshua Zirkzee could influence whether United pursue a backup striker for Benjamin Sesko.

The report notes that injuries, inflated fees and Rashford’s uncertain status continue to complicate United’s transfer agenda, with the Ugarte injury particularly frustrating for budget planning. Nevertheless, the involvement of Carrick in the process is highlighted as the most positive sign for a coherent recruitment strategy.
