Unai Simón leads the race for the Yashin Trophy at the London Gala

Unai Simón appeared on the red carpet at the Ballon d'Or Gala in London, an event that starts at nine at night. The Spanish goalkeeper arrives as a favourite to lift the Yashin Trophy, award for the best goalkeeper in the world. His presence underscores the relevance of the Spanish nomination.

Favorites for the Yashin Trophy

According to journalist Carlos Zaballa, the international press has pointed to Simón as the main candidate for the award. The gala, organized by the AP, will bring together the best players on the planet under the gaze of the global audience.

“It’s a pride for me to be here. When you’re small you don’t think you can get so far. You keep burning stages and you start seeing yourself there. Like the title at the World Cup, you value it much more over time, but as of today I am proud to be nominated,” Simón said in front of the Movistar cameras.

Nominated teammates and opinions

Alongside him, David Raya and Joan García were also selected, the other two goalkeepers who were part of the Spanish squad at the World Cup held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

“Luis will be super happy to have the three nominated goalkeepers. I’m happy that the Spanish goalkeeping is well covered,” Simón added.

Simón himself praised David for his ball handling with the foot, which according to him provides greater possession to the team. Regarding Joan, he stated that he is up to the level of the best in history. He described his personal style as “calm, serene”, a quality he tries to maintain in decisive moments.

After the press conference, former player Murgia spoke with the official Athletic media, recalling that a few years ago they fought for the same goal and achieved a second place, aiming to surpass it this year. He added that the values instilled from a young age have taught him to be loyal to the team and love its colours, and concluded that he feels prouder than ever. Finally, Simón remembered all the people who have accompanied him in his career and expressed his wish to be able to thank them soon.
