Weghorst leaves Ajax for Twente after two years in Amsterdam

Ajax have confirmed the departure of striker Wout Weghorst (33) to FC Twente. The 52-time Netherlands international, currently at the FIFA World Cup with his national team, has signed a two-year contract with the Eredivisie club. The move ends Weghorst’s two-year spell at Ajax, where he made 68 appearances and scored 35 goals across all competitions. His final contribution for the Amsterdam side came during the World Cup break, with the club confirming the transfer on the same day he featured in Oranje’s group-stage fixture. Weghorst joined Ajax in 2022 from Burnley and quickly became a key figure in Erik ten Hag’s side before the Dutch coach’s departure. Since then, he has featured under Alfred Schreuder and John Heitinga, scoring 18 goals in his first season and 17 in his second. FC Twente, currently fifth in the Eredivisie, will integrate Weghorst into a squad that has already exceeded expectations under head coach Joseph Oosting. The club has emphasized building a competitive team capable of challenging for European spots. The striker’s arrival at Twente follows the departure of Enis Bardhi, who left for Al-Riyadh earlier this month. Twente’s technical staff have highlighted Weghorst’s experience and leadership as key assets for their ambitions. Weghorst’s international career spans 52 caps since his debut in 2016, with his most recent appearance coming in the Netherlands’ 3-1 victory over Senegal at the World Cup. His move to Twente coincides with a transitional period for Ajax, who are rebuilding following the exits of key players this summer. Ajax director of football Sven Mislintat confirmed the transfer in a club statement, noting Weghorst’s professionalism and impact during his time in Amsterdam. The club did not disclose financial terms of the deal.
