Westerlo's €1.5m gamble on German youth defender Reno Münz
German junior international defender Reno Münz has joined Belgian Pro League side KVC Westerlo on a four‑year deal, with the club paying €1.5 million to Greuther Fürth, a move confirmed on Wednesday by club official Sacha Tavolieri.
Münz is a left‑footed centre‑back who has represented Germany at U19 and U20 levels. He evolved in the youth academies of Fortuna Düsseldorf and Bayer Leverkusen before joining Greuther Fürth in July 2024. He became a regular starter for Greuther Fürth’s central defence from October 2025 and logged 28 second‑division matches last season. His Indonesian heritage makes him eligible for the senior Indonesia national team, adding a potential marketability factor.
At Westerlo, Münz will contest defensive slots with Emin Bayram, Seiji Kimura, Michée Ndembi and Amando Lapage. The club said, “With the signing of Reno Münz, KVC Westerlo strengthens its defensive line with a talented and versatile defender.” The statement highlighted his talent and versatility as key attributes.
The arrivals coincide with the departures of Bakary Haïdara and veteran Roman Neustädter on 30 June. Their exits open up further opportunities in the back line for the new signing.
Westerlo’s recent €10 million investment in striker Nacho Ferri for Feyenoord demonstrates the club’s willingness to spend. The €1.5 million fee for Münz aligns with this demonstrated financial capacity.
The four‑year contract gives Münz the chance to establish himself in the Belgian Pro League. For Westerlo, the signing bolsters a defence that lost experienced players over the summer. Both parties aim to benefit from the player’s development and the club’s competitive ambitions.
