Why FC Twente’s new signing Wout Weghorst could reshape their attack

🇳🇱
Former Dutch striker Wim Kieft is eager to see Wout Weghorst don the FC Twente shirt, after the 33‑year‑old’s move from Ajax. Weghorst logged 34 appearances and nine goals for Ajax last season and was selected by Ronald Koeman for the Netherlands squad at the 2026 World Cup. FC Twente aim to add firepower to their attack, a need highlighted by Kieft’s comments on the club’s weekly expectations. Kieft told the KieftJansenEgmondGijp podcast that the club’s fans will “scratch their ears weekly” to see whether the striker can consistently deliver. The transfer of Weghorst to FC Twente was described by Kieft as “a good purchase for them” on the same podcast. He added that both the club and supporters have reasons to be pleased with the signing. Rob Jansen, legal adviser to Ronald Koeman, also praised the move, calling it “great for the competition.” Jansen expects Weghorst to add a few more goals to the Eredivisie tally. Kieft concurred, stating that the striker “will also score a few” for FC Twente. He believes the addition will help the club achieve its offensive objectives. Last season, Weghorst featured in 34 matches for Ajax, finding the net nine times. His playing time at Ajax demonstrates his experience at the top Dutch level. Internationally, Ronald Koeman included the striker in the Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Weghorst made his World Cup debut in the group match against Morocco, a game that ended in a penalty shoot‑out loss for Oranje. Looking ahead, Kieft and Jansen expect Weghorst to translate his Eredivisie and World Cup experience into regular goals for De Tukkers. Their optimism suggests the striker’s integration will be closely monitored as the season progresses.
