Why Joan Laporta sees Camp Nou as the perfect 2030 World Cup finale

🇪🇸
At his inauguration ceremony in the Auditori 1899, Barcelona president Joan Laporta, now entering a third term, declared that the Spotify Camp Nou would be the ideal venue for the 2030 World Cup final, citing its capacity, modern facilities and the global attention the recent U.S. tournament generated. The 2030 tournament will open in South America, with Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay hosting the first matches as part of the centenary celebration. Most of the competition will then be staged across Morocco, Portugal and Spain. FIFA’s final venue shortlist currently lists three contenders: Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou, Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu, and Morocco’s Hassan II Stadium, which remains under construction. For Barcelona, securing the final would signal a global statement after years of stadium construction, financial strain and a period of temporary relocation. Laporta’s board deliberately undertook the Camp Nou renovation despite the risks. If the renovated arena hosts football’s biggest match, it would become a symbolic victory of Laporta’s mandate. He acknowledges the inevitable Clasico rivalry, noting that Real Madrid will naturally argue that the Bernabeu deserves the final. The Camp Nou renovation is still underway, and Barcelona have waited years to see their home transformed into a modern arena capable of matching the world’s largest stadiums. A photo by Judit Cartiel captures the ongoing construction. Laporta admits the decision lies beyond his club’s control, but he insists he will not give up without a fight. Whether the Camp Nou receives FIFA’s nod remains to be decided.
