Why Premier League risks the abyss like Serie A: Super League model
In its report, the new independent body that monitors clubs' spending painted a bleak picture: English football is on the brink of the abyss, a finding also supported by the IFR President, David Kogan. The document highlights that while some clubs remain among the richest in the world, others are edging toward financial disaster.
The losses of top clubs
The report notes that United has dismissed numerous staff, while the Manchester City and Palermo group records a loss close to £300 million. Tottenham records almost £100 million loss and Chelsea’s situation is described as “better not to talk about it”.
According to the analysis, revenues remain almost structural, but the reliance on staying in the Premier makes it difficult to address budget problems, unless a “slimming cure” for a few seasons.
The second English tier, although richer than our Serie B, is limited to sharing crumbs, with League One and League Two suffering a contraction of revenues in case of relegation.
The author suggests that only a franchise Super League, without relegations, could save the situation, wondering what clubs like Bournemouth, Brentford or Brighton, examples of financial prudence, think.
