Zidane wants Cherki as France's offensive pivot

Rayan Cherki could play a key role in Zinedine Zidane's plans at the helm of the France team. The young number ten of Manchester City was already in the starting lineup against Turkey on Friday in the Nations League, where he occupied a deeper midfield position.

Coach's precise idea

The French coach clearly indicated that he has a precise idea of the role he wants to assign to Cherki. According to Zidane, the player must operate in several attacking positions, thus exploiting his playmaking talent.

During the 1-0 victory over Turkey, Cherki was deployed in a deeper role, participating in the build-up play. This stance allowed France to control the midfield while maintaining its offensive dynamism.

Zidane plans to replicate this usage, believing that the Marseille-born coach can maximise the player's qualities. He wants Cherki to contribute both to the offensive thrust and to defensive recovery.

On Téléfoot on Sunday, Zidane said: “He can be versatile, he is able to play in all the forward positions. Honestly, quality players can do it. That’s also my desire, the desire of the moment, and he is capable of doing it.”

He also highlighted the defensive work of the former Lyon player, stating: “We know what he can do with the ball, but also without the ball. In a position where he can also defend, he did it superbly. It’s a great position that I appreciate for him.”
