Aguero backs Manchester City’s Elliot Anderson pursuit after Silva exit
Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has publicly endorsed the club’s pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. Aguero described Anderson as a complete box-to-box player who could fill the void left by Bernardo Silva’s departure to Real Madrid.
The Argentine’s comments come as City prepare a third formal bid for Anderson, with owner Evangelos Marinakis holding out for a package around £130 million, including £110 million up front. Personal terms with Anderson have already been agreed, and England manager Thomas Tuchel has permitted the midfielder to undergo a medical during the FIFA World Cup in North America, indicating the deal’s advanced stage.
Anderson’s potential arrival carries added significance following Silva’s exit, as incoming manager Enzo Maresca seeks fresh energy for the engine room. Aguero, City’s all-time leading goalscorer, emphasized Anderson’s ability to win the ball back and create play while covering extensive ground.

Aguero stated during a Stake interview: “From what I’ve read, City are currently leading the race for Anderson. He’s a very complete box-to-box player who wins the ball back and helps create play. He covers a lot of ground.” He added: “With Bernardo’s departure, although they have different characteristics, he could play a very important role in the team if the transfer is completed.” City’s recruitment department, led by Hugo Viana, views Anderson as a priority target, with a completed deal set to break the club’s transfer record. Marinakis has acknowledged the inevitability of Anderson’s sale to City, though financial discrepancies have stalled the move for weeks. The pursuit also coincides with City’s interest in Sandro Tonali, with a potential double swoop involving Newcastle teammate Anthony Gordon under consideration. Aguero’s endorsement, while influential among supporters, does not impact ongoing negotiations with Forest. His caveat—“if the transfer is completed”—highlights the remaining hurdles despite the deal’s progress.
