Nice threatens legal action over Ligue 1-L2 playoff scheduling
OGC Nice has sent a formal complaint to the French Football League (LFP) regarding the scheduling of the Ligue 1-Ligue 2 playoffs. The letter, sent before Tuesday’s first leg against AS Saint-Etienne, contests the timing of the fixtures.
The club argues the LFP’s decision conflicts with FIFA’s refusal to grant dispensations for international duty players. This issue arises as Nice prepares for its playoff tie against Saint-Etienne.
The LFP has scheduled the playoff matches before the international break, which prevents Nice’s internationals from participating. The club’s management considers this arrangement unfair and potentially detrimental to its competitive interests.
In the complaint, Nice highlights the inconvenience caused by the LFP’s scheduling. The club emphasizes that players called up for international duty cannot feature in the playoff matches under current rules.
The first leg of the playoff against Saint-Etienne is set for May 26. Nice’s complaint underscores the tension between domestic league requirements and international football obligations.
The club’s legal team has indicated potential further action if the LFP does not address the issue. This move reflects Nice’s determination to challenge the current playoff framework.
AS Saint-Etienne remains unaffected by the dispute, as the club has no players involved in international duty for the upcoming fixtures. The match proceeds as scheduled under the LFP’s original plan.
The LFP has not yet responded publicly to Nice’s complaint. The outcome of this dispute could set a precedent for future playoff scheduling in French football.
