Cardiff City mourns Richard ‘Shep’ Shepherd, 81

🇬🇧 2 uur geleden

Former Cardiff City and BBC Radio Wales commentator Richard ‘Shep’ Shepherd has died at the age of 81. Shepherd began covering the Bluebirds in the early 1970s while working for the BBC, later becoming editor of the club’s official matchday programme in 1985 and serving as its historian and matchday voice for more than three decades.

Shepherd oversaw the production of Cardiff City’s official matchday programme, shaping its content and style for years. His editorial leadership helped preserve the club’s matchday narratives for supporters.

Cardiff City issued a statement expressing condolences to Shepherd’s widow, Brenda, and his family, friends, and colleagues in Welsh sport. "We offer our sincerest condolences to Richard's widow, Brenda, his family and his many friends and colleagues in Welsh sport and further afield. With fond memories. Rest easy, Shep," the club wrote.

Shepherd’s broadcasting career began with BBC Radio Wales, where he reported on local football before focusing on Cardiff City. His early reporting laid the foundation for a lifelong association with the Bluebirds.

Over more than three decades, Shepherd became a familiar voice on matchdays, delivering live commentary that resonated with fans. He also compiled historical records, contributing to the club’s archival projects.

Cardiff City and the wider Welsh sporting community remember Shepherd as a key chronicler of the game. His legacy endures through the programmes and histories he helped create.
