Celtic Target Bosnian Midfielder Ivan Basic This Summer
Celtic are monitoring Ivan Basic for a possible summer transfer, according to a report in The Scottish Sun. The club sees the 24‑year‑old as a potential midfield reinforcement.
Basic currently plays for Astana and is representing Bosnia and Herzegovina at the FIFA World Cup 2026. He impressed in a 1‑1 draw with Canada during the tournament.
The Bosnian progressed through the academy ranks of Posušje and Zrinjski Mostar before breaking into Zrinjski’s first‑team squad. He then moved to the Russian top‑flight side Oreburg in the summer of 2022.
After three seasons in Russia, Basic signed for Astana last summer on a contract that runs until December 2026. The move gave him a platform to showcase his abilities on the international stage.
Celtic would aim to secure Basic for a minimal fee, but Porto and Espanyol have also expressed interest, potentially sparking a bidding war. The competition could drive up his market value.
Manager Martin O’Neill, appointed as interim chief, extended his contract after delivering a domestic double. Celtic’s midfield overhaul may involve decisions on Alex Oxlade‑Chamberlain’s extension, Paulo Bernardo’s future, and Luke McCowan’s role.
Arne Engels is linked with Serie A clubs Napoli and Lazio, suggesting further departures. Callum McGregor remains the deep‑lying playmaker, but Celtic need a long‑term successor.
Benjamin Tahirovic, Basic’s fellow Bosnian and current Celtic midfielder, could be part of a broader Bosnian recruitment strategy. The club may target one or both players.
