Chelsea seek compensation from Manchester City for Maresca
Manchester City and Chelsea are in advanced talks over a compensation package for Enzo Maresca. The talks follow Pep Guardiola’s 22 May announcement that he will step down after a trophy‑laden decade. Maresca is the leading candidate to replace Guardiola at City.
Chelsea argue Maresca left the club in January while under contract until 2029, and therefore they are due compensation. The London club has explored legal options and expects a payment, though the amount and timing remain unclear. Negotiations have been complicated by Chelsea learning of City’s interest as early as October and again in December.
While at Chelsea, Maresca won the Club World Cup and the Conference League before departing. He later served as Guardiola’s assistant during Manchester City’s Treble‑winning 2022‑23 campaign and contributed to the club’s academy before joining the first team.
Both senior figures from Manchester City and Chelsea continue discussions, with the compensation package still unresolved. The outcome will determine whether Maresca can move to City without further dispute.
