Germany names World Cup squad dominated by three states
The German Football Association (DFB) announced a World Cup squad of 26 players. A training goalkeeper was also named, bringing the traveling party to 27 members.
All 27 will depart for the United States to join the tournament. The group is assembled to represent Germany at the FIFA World Cup.
The majority of the players originate from three German federal states. Those three states together account for most of the roster.
The concentration of talent has ignited discussion about regional balance within the national team. Observers question whether the limited state representation poses a problem for German football.
