FC Barcelona confirms Fermín López surgery, misses World Cup
FC Barcelona announced that Fermín López will undergo surgery for a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. The operation rules him out of the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, which begins in June.
The injury is a fracture of the fifth metatarsal, a bone located on the outer side of the foot. It affects his right foot, the side he primarily uses for play.
Medical staff determined that surgical intervention is required to treat the fracture. The procedure will be performed promptly following the club’s announcement.
The timing of the surgery coincides with the start of the World Cup, scheduled for June. As a result, López will not be available for selection by the national team.
Barcelona’s medical department will oversee his rehabilitation after the operation. The club has not disclosed a specific timetable for his return to training.
The loss leaves the national squad without one of its options ahead of the tournament. The team will need to adjust its roster accordingly.
