Atlético de Madrid accuses Barcelona of smear campaign over Julián Álvarez
Atlético de Madrid posted on X in the past few hours accusing FC Barcelona of a smear campaign targeting their striker Julián Álvarez. The Spanish club said Barcelona's actions are "completely reprehensible" in relation to the player.
The post displayed images of Barça youngsters Lamine Yamal, Pedri González and Raphinha Dias wearing Atlético kits. A caption beneath the images read: "No, Atlético de Madrid would never do that."
Atlético claimed they have endured an "unrelenting campaign of discredit" over recent months. The club listed calculated leaks, fabricated news and constant contempt as elements of the alleged campaign. It also mentioned pre‑match phone calls as part of the pressure.
According to Atlético, Barcelona's "propaganda machine" invents stories to damage the player. The statement warned that such tactics undermine respect and values in football.
Atlético denied any involvement with the vice‑president of the referees or the use of political influence to register players. It affirmed that no such favors have been granted by the club.
Neither Atlético nor Barcelona have issued a response since the X post. The dispute could spill over into their upcoming La Liga clash later this season.
