Everton negotiate free signing of defender John Stones

🇬🇧 2 uur geleden

Everton are in advanced talks to sign 32‑year‑old defender John Stones on a free transfer, aiming to complete the deal before the World Cup concludes. The former Everton player left Goodison Park a decade ago for Manchester City and is currently with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

Stones spent ten seasons at Manchester City, collecting 19 major honours including six Premier League titles. He lifted the 2018/19 Premier League trophy at an after‑party celebration on 25 May 2026 in Manchester, an event captured by photographer Lewis Storey.

His earlier spell at Everton ended ten years ago when he left Goodison Park for the bright lights of Manchester. The move marked the start of a trophy‑laden decade in England’s capital.

Elite Serie A clubs have shown serious interest in the free‑agent defender. Everton’s hierarchy remains confident they can outbid and out‑persuade the Italian suitors.

Stones is currently away with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup. Everton hope to secure his signature before the tournament ends to make a massive statement.

David Moyes inherited a backline that finished 13th last season, exposing a fragile defence. He sees Stones as the leadership figure needed to stabilise the defence.

Stones arrives on a free transfer, meaning Everton face no fee for the acquisition. His Premier League pedigree eliminates any adaptation period, allowing immediate integration.

His last two campaigns at City were plagued by persistent fitness issues, and the Etihad style allowed him to coast through games in second gear, raising concerns over his ability to endure 40 matches a season. If his wage package proves costly and injuries recur, the club could face a financial disaster, placing a heavy burden on the medical staff.
