FIFA rule lets Premier League outcasts demand free transfers

🇬🇧 5 uur geleden
FIFA and the global players’ union FIFPRO have signed an agreement that permits players excluded from first‑team squads to request a free transfer. The rule will affect Premier League clubs that have used the so‑called “bomb squad” system, notably Chelsea and Manchester United. Players such as Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell have previously been isolated from the main squad or barred from regular first‑team activities. These players could now invoke the new provision to terminate their contracts without a transfer fee. Under the deal, clubs may no longer isolate players to pressure them into leaving, nor exploit registration rules against unhappy players. If a club breaches the standards, the affected player may claim “just sporting cause” and end the contract, with only possible compensation for the remaining term. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the agreement places player welfare at the centre of decision‑making and moves football toward shared discussion rather than unilateral imposition. The arrangement also restores FIFPRO’s formal role in global discussions after a period of tension, and the association will drop its ongoing legal action once the agreement is finalised. Players’ representatives continue to push for mandatory summer rest periods as part of the unresolved global football calendar issue.
