Forest Green Rovers secure James Berry, a two‑division drop for Savage

Forest Green Rovers have secured the services of 25‑year‑old midfielder James Berry on a season‑long loan from Wycombe Wanderers, moving the player two divisions down after a spell at League Two side Chesterfield where he netted five goals last term.

Berry spent the previous season on loan back at Chesterfield, the Spireites, and recorded five goals for the club. He has yet to make a start for Wycombe Wanderers since signing for them in January 2025.

The loan sees Berry drop two divisions to join Robbie Savage's Rovers. Savage, the manager of Forest Green Rovers, will have the midfielder for the remainder of the campaign.

Berry also previously featured for Macclesfield, the club where Savage was in charge before moving to Forest Green. That prior connection likely influenced the loan agreement.

"He is undoubtedly one of the best talents I have ever worked with, and his ability is unquestionable," Savage said, praising Berry’s potential.

The season‑long loan provides Forest Green Rovers with an additional midfield option. Berry’s five‑goal record at Chesterfield suggests he can add an offensive edge.

Wycombe Wanderers signed Berry in January 2025 but he never made a start. The move to Forest Green offers him regular playing time at a higher competitive level.
