Franck Leboeuf recalls 1998 World Cup final triumph over Brazil

🇫🇷 2 uur geleden

In an exclusive interview, former France defender Franck Leboeuf reflects on stepping into the 1998 World Cup final against Brazil after Laurent Blanc’s red card in the semi‑final, describing it as the match of his life and recounting the daily gratitude he receives from French fans.

Leboeuf played in the group stage match against Denmark. He did not expect to feature again until the semi‑final incident.

When Laurent Blanc was sent off in the semi‑final, Leboeuf was called upon to step up. He recalled Aimé Jacquet’s reassurance, quoting the coach: “but I didn’t need to talk to you, I knew it was all fine”.

Jacquet had told Leboeuf earlier, “I had full confidence in you, I’d known you since 1992, I didn’t have any concerns”. The defender said the coach’s belief guided his preparation for the final.

In the final, Leboeuf faced Brazilian forwards Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Bebeto, each targeting him. He described the experience as a “fairy‑tale” match where he had to work hard against world‑class talent.

Leboeuf compared the World Cup final to his club successes, noting he had also played in Cup and European finals with Chelsea. Yet he said the national triumph was “the match of my life” and that French supporters thank him daily.

He expressed a wish that other players could feel the same gratitude, saying, “Every day French people come up to me and say ‘thank you’”. The interview was published by Get French Football News, with Jeremy Smith as the author.
