Gennaro Gattuso appointed Lazio head coach on two year deal

Gennaro Gattuso has been officially hired by Serie A side Lazio on Tuesday, with Italian media reporting a two‑year contract. The 48‑year‑old coach left his Italy role in April after the Azzurri missed out on a third consecutive World Cup. Lazio announced the appointment without revealing contract details.

Lazio released a short statement confirming the move, quoting “Lazio announces that it has appointed Mr. Gennaro Gattuso as head coach of the first team.” The club added that “the club ... is confident that his experience, professionalism, and determination will contribute to achieving the club’s sporting objectives.” The announcement did not disclose any financial terms.

Gattuso departed his role as Italy manager in April, days after the Azzurri failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. He had been at a press conference in Zenica, Bosnia, on March 30, 2026, ahead of Italy's World Cup match.

In his managerial career, Gattuso previously coached AC Milan and Napoli in Serie A. He secured the Italian Cup with Napoli in 2020, a trophy that underscores his domestic experience.

Gattuso replaces Maurizio Sarri at Lazio. Sarri was appointed as Atalanta coach last month, ending his brief stint with the Roman club.
