Harry Kane calls ‘Wonderwall’ moment with fans a World Cup highlight

🇬🇧 3 uur geleden

Harry Kane said the singing of Oasis’s “Wonderwall” after England’s 4‑2 victory over Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday created a “special moment” linking the squad with its supporters. The striker’s double equalled Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup goals, underscoring the significance of the opening Group L fixture.

Kane expressed a wish that “Wonderwall” become the unofficial anthem of England’s World Cup campaign. He told the Lions Den that the scene was “one of my favourite ever moments in an England shirt and especially at a major tournament”.

He added that, despite it being only the first game, the emotional connection with fans mattered greatly. Kane noted the night‑time atmosphere, the crowd singing, and the “plenty of beer getting thrown around”.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has repeatedly stressed the need for a strong “brotherhood” within the squad. Tuchel’s approach builds on the foundations laid during the 2018 World Cup under Sir Gareth Southgate.

Kane highlighted that only three players remain from the 2018 squad – himself, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and defender John Stones. He described the current group as “fresh” with renewed energy.

Reflecting on his role, Kane said the older, more experienced players have seen their responsibilities shift. He said the squad shows “hunger, desire and excitement” to be part of what could be a special summer.

The match against Croatia showcased England’s depth, with substitutes Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Morgan Rogers all making an impact. Kane stressed that every player, whether starter or bench, contributes to the team’s level.

“Throughout a tournament you need all the players in the squad,” Kane said. He concluded that the collective effort makes it “a great squad to be a part of”.
