Senate debates bill to return Maroni River remains to Guyana

🇫🇷 3 dagen geleden
The French Senate debated a bill on Monday to restitute human remains to Guyana. The proposal targets the remains of men, women and children from the Maroni River region. The debate took place in the upper chamber. The draft law calls for the return of the remains to their place of origin in Guyana. It specifically addresses individuals who died after being displayed in Paris. The legislation aims to correct a historical injustice. In 1892, people from the banks of the Maroni River were exhibited at the Jardin d’acclimatation in Paris. The display was part of a popular attraction of the era. The individuals were presented as exotic curiosities. The exhibited men, women and children later died on site in Paris. Their remains have remained in French custody since the exhibition. The proposal seeks to transfer these remains back to Guyana. The case reflects the legacy of so‑called “human zoos” that were common in the nineteenth century. Such exhibitions attracted large numbers of visitors seeking exotic spectacle. The Senate discussion marks a renewed focus on historical accountability. If the bill is adopted, the remains will be repatriated to Guyana. The outcome will set a precedent for addressing similar colonial‑era displays. The Senate will continue to consider the proposal in the coming weeks.
