Joe Jordan recalls Scotland's unbeaten 1974 World Cup

🇬🇧 5 uur geleden
Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cruyff starred at the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, but Scotland finished the tournament unbeaten despite exiting in the first round. Former Scotland forward Joe Jordan and former captain Davie Hay recall the campaign, noting manager Willie Ormond’s unconventional preparation. Scotland qualified for the finals for the first time since 1958, becoming the sole British Isles nation present. Warm‑up games in Belgium and Norway preceded a night‑out in Largs where winger Jimmy Johnstone commandeered a rowing boat without oars; Eric Schaedler and the coastguard rescued him after the boat began to take on water. On 14 June in Dortmund, Scotland opened the group with a 2‑0 win over Zaire, goals coming from Joe Jordan and Peter Lorimer. Jordan later admitted the team could have pressed for more, while Zaire coach Miljan Miljanic, a former Yugoslav international, saw his side suffer a heavy defeat. Six days later in Frankfurt, Scotland held Brazil to a goalless draw. A Joe Jordan header was saved by goalkeeper Leao, the rebound striking Billy Bremner’s shin before rolling wide, and Davie Hay praised the side’s balance against the South American giants. Scotland’s final group match on 22 June in Frankfurt ended 1‑1 against Yugoslavia, with Jordan scoring a late equaliser. The draw left Scotland, Brazil and Yugoslavia level on points, but Scotland were eliminated on goal difference, having conceded only one goal. West Germany eventually beat the Netherlands 2‑1 in the final, while East Germany had earlier lost to the hosts. Scotland therefore remained the only unbeaten team of the tournament despite not advancing. The 1974 Scotland squad listed Allan of Dundee, Harvey of Leeds United and Stewart of Kilmarnock as goalkeepers; defenders included Blackley of Hibernian, Buchan of Manchester United, Donachie of Manchester City and Holton. The selection combined players from Scottish and English clubs.
