John McGinn scores Scotland’s World Cup winner against Haiti

🇬🇧 2 uur geleden
John McGinn delivered Scotland’s decisive World Cup winner against Haiti at Gillette Stadium, sparking celebrations from the Tartan Army. The midfielder, who captained Aston Villa to Europa League glory and scored ten club goals this season, now faces a crucial clash with Morocco. After Aston Villa’s Europa League triumph parade in Birmingham, manager Unai Emery launched into a rendition of “Super John McGinn”. A few weeks later, fans outside Boston’s Faneuil Hall performed their own version, echoing the celebration across the Atlantic. The last Scottish player to score in a World Cup win before McGinn was Stuart McCall and Mo Johnston in 1990. Tom Boyd’s unfortunate final touch for Brazil in the 1998 decider was also recalled as a historic footnote. Scotland supporters set new noise‑level records at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, amplifying the atmosphere for McGinn’s strike. The midfielder is expected to be a key figure when Scotland meet Morocco on Friday. McGinn captained Aston Villa to a top‑four finish and netted a spectacular goal against Liverpool that sealed their Champions League qualification. He also scored in the Europa League semi‑final against Nottingham Forest and lifted Villa’s first European trophy in 44 years after the victory over Freiburg, joining Dennis Mortimer as one of two captains to raise continental silverware for the club. Andy Robertson, the vice‑captain, and McGinn have formed the double act underpinning Steve Clarke’s regime, with Robertson having been released by Celtic as a teenager. McGinn joked that his favourite meal is “chips”, joined locals for Bavarian dancing, and noted friends such as Robertson and Jack Grealish lifting major honours before the Europa League final. He recorded a career‑best ten goals for Aston Villa this season and his 21st for Scotland, a tally only Kenny Dalglish and Denis Law have exceeded in the last seven decades. McGinn arrived at Villa for £2.5 million when they were a Championship club, and he admitted after the match, “I scuffed it a wee bit,” he said.
