Iñigo Lekue retires after 11 seasons at Athletic Club
Iñigo Lekue ended his 11-year spell at Athletic Club with a captain’s farewell at Santiago Bernabéu. He made 282 appearances before retiring on the pitch, tears visible as the referee blew the final whistle.
Lekue wore the armband in his final match, marking the end of a club career that began in 2013. He scored 11 goals and won the 2021 Copa del Rey as part of the squad.
In a post-match statement, Lekue said: “After eleven years I look back and the feelings are wonderful. I cherish every moment, not a single one stands out above the rest. I remember countless matches, training sessions, trips, and daily routines.”
He acknowledged this season’s struggles but called his overall tenure “a tremendous pride.” Athletic Club confirmed his departure via club channels.
Lekue, 33, joined Athletic’s youth system at age 15 and progressed through the ranks to make his senior debut. He represented the club in 26 La Liga matches this season.
Athletic Club will honor his contribution with a tribute ahead of next season’s opener.
