Lukas Podolski ends career after 20-year professional run
Lukas Podolski has announced the end of his professional football career after more than two decades.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup winner becomes the final member of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad to retire. Podolski’s career spanned top European clubs and the German national team, marking the close of a generation.
Podolski began his professional journey with 1. FC Köln before moving to Bayern Munich in 2006. His time at Bayern included a loan spell at 1. FC Köln before establishing himself as a key figure in the team.
A move to Arsenal followed in 2012, where he made over 100 appearances and contributed to the club’s Premier League campaigns. His stint in England added to his reputation as a versatile forward.
Podolski returned to 1. FC Köln in 2015, where he continued to feature prominently in the Bundesliga. His leadership and experience were pivotal in the club’s efforts during his second spell.
Internationally, Podolski earned 130 caps for Germany between 2004 and 2017. He scored 49 goals, including crucial contributions in major tournaments.
His final major tournament was UEFA EURO 2016, where he played a role in Germany’s run to the semifinals. Podolski’s international retirement followed shortly after.
Podolski’s career also included brief stints with Galatasaray and Gwangju FC in later years. These experiences added to his global footballing profile.
