Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert linked to spying scandal
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been identified as the initiator of a spying operation on rival clubs, new documents reveal. An intern was tasked with recording opponent training sessions under his direction. The club was expelled from the Championship playoffs last month after the breaches were confirmed.
The documents state the intern was told the “manager loved it”, confirming Eckert’s approval of the recordings. The intern’s role involved capturing footage of training drills from opposing teams.
The spying targeted Oxford United, Ipswich and Middlesbrough, whose sessions were recorded without permission. Those clubs were the specific opponents cited in the investigation.
Southampton’s appeal against the expulsion was rejected by the panel reviewing the case. The panel’s remarks underscored that the club’s actions violated competition rules.
Eckert has publicly maintained he was unaware that the recordings breached regulations. He asserted he did not know the actions broke any rules.
The Football Association has opened a formal investigation into Eckert’s involvement. Further disciplinary measures may follow pending the inquiry’s outcome.
