Manchester City near signing Sheffield Wednesday keeper Pierce Charles
Manchester City reportedly edging closer to signing 20‑year‑old Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday. The club is also expected to seek a backup keeper after James Trafford signals a departure.
James Trafford has told Manchester City he does not want to remain Gianluigi Donnarumma’s understudy for another season. Graeme Bailey said City have accepted his stance, and David Ornstein reported that Newcastle United have expressed interest. Trafford will decide on his future after the World Cup.
Pierce Charles, who has one year left on his Sheffield Wednesday contract, is linked with a move as the club faces relegation to League One. Bailey noted that Charles is very good with his feet and an impressive shot‑stopper. His age and potential could allow City to sell him for profit or use him as a long‑term replacement for Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City could also pursue an experienced option in the Stefan Ortega mould, a route that proved shrewd when Ortega was signed. Signing Charles would address both short‑term backup needs and long‑term planning for the goalkeeper position.
