Matt Baker will leave Newport County after turning down an improved contract at Rodney Parade, club statement confirmed. The 23‑year‑old centre‑back rejected the offer, making it the second swift departure for Christian Fuchs’ side after winger Bobby Kamwa also declined a new deal. Baker, a former Wales Under‑21 international who earned a senior Wales call‑up in summer 2024, captained the Exiles during their fight to avoid relegation to the National League. He initially joined Newport County on loan from Stoke in January 2023, returned for a second spell, and signed permanently from the Potters in summer 2024, tallying 144 appearances.
