Mourinho's Benfica finish unbeaten but miss Champions League
José Mourinho and Benfica completed the Portuguese Primeira Liga season unbeaten but missed out on a Champions League place.
The team went through the league without a loss. Their unbeaten status was maintained until the final round.
However, the unbeaten record was insufficient for Champions League qualification. The club finished outside the qualifying places.
Mourinho’s side therefore missed out on Europe’s premier competition. The achievement of an unbeaten season did not translate into a Champions League spot.
The season’s conclusion leaves Benfica without a place in the Champions League. The club will need to address the gap between domestic success and European qualification.
Looking ahead, the club will aim to combine its unbeaten consistency with Champions League qualification in the next campaign.
